An English assessment measures current reading and writing skills, and shows whether a student has the necessary skills to enter a program or if they need to complete some English upgrading first.
Թϱ offers several options for completing an English assessment. See the descriptions below to determine which option is best for you.
Option A: Assessment & Testing Centre
Select Option A if you have already completed English 10 but need a higher placement for your program.
This is a computer-based assessment best suited for students who are confident in with their English skills in reading and writing.
Note: If you need to assess for listening and speaking too, see Option Cbelow.
Option B: Access Assessment
Select Option B if you have not completed up to English 10 and would benefit fromindividualized support while completing your assessment. This assessment is one-to-one with a Camosun instructor.
Note: This assessment places up to grade 11 level only.
Option C: English Language Development
SelectOption Cif English isnotyour first language and you need toupgradeall areas ofyour English skills:listening,speaking, reading and writing.
Note: This test is not valid for immigration purposes.
Option D: Community Learning Partnerships
You can also take a one-to-one assessment through Community Learning Partnerships, which offers classes at community-based sites to make it easier to begin or return to learning.
Select Option Dif you would like to complete your assessment with the any of following partnerships:
- Bridges for Women Society (Downtown and Westshore locations)
- Island Community Mental Health, W̱SÁNEĆ College
- Victoria Native Friendship Centre
- Malahat Nation Community
Accommodated assessments
If you have a documented disability and need support and accommodations—such as adaptive software or a private room—to complete your English assessment, contact Centre for Accessible Learning(CAL) before booking an assessment. They will help ensure you are met with the appropriate supports.
If you only require extra time or need to complete the assessment across multiple sessions, you can e-mail assessment@camosun.ca to adjust your assessment.
